Mystical Casino

2020
Performative game based on the ritual of poker.

The game allows you to invoke historical characters in order to open up a dialogue on the neglected history of witches and their stigmatisation.

By intertwining antique and modern witch history, reappropriating the stereotypes given to witches, the game aims to discuss a new contemporary definition of the witch.

Another character to invoke is
Medusa, from the " antique witch " archetype.

The myth of Medusa has a relevant echo in the contemporary discussion on the Western Justice system.

Medusa has been punished by the godess of Justice right after she's been raped by Apollo.

The curse she received from the godess Athena makes every men who looks at her turn into stone.

It's blaming the victim and also protecting her from having the same trauma. This ambivalent role of Justice is still recognizable in our Justice tribunal.
One of the characters to invoke is
Gaelle Baumann, from the "contemporary witch" archetype.

Gaelle Baumann is a bewitching poker player. She is one of the very few women in professional poker world ( 2-3% in international poker competition).
Poker has been a game reserved for a long time to men, in the USA, being a good buisness man in the 50's also meant to be a good poker player.
The game was said to be masculine because of its confrontational aspect which is not for women
to like.

Gaelle Baumann still bluffs and cast spells in a very male dominated envirronment. That is one of the things that makes her a contemporary witch.
